The First World War represented a major crisis of the capitalist world economy.

It saw the complete breakdown of the pre-war system based on Britain and the gold standard.  Rapid industrialization overseas accompanied economic paralysis in Europe.  The economy and state apparatus became merged in most of the warring countries.  Yet for the international labour movement, the Russian Revolution seemed to represent a triumph arising out of near-disaster.

These are the central themes of Professor Hardach's masterly synthesis of the economic developments behind the scenes in the Great War.  Military and political historians too often write about the Allied blockade and the U-boat war, armaments policy and the problems of food supply, without considering the crucial and fascinating economic dimension.
