The six towns making up the modern Walsall Metropolitan Borough had a world-wide impact in the nineteenth century, manufacturing and exporting large quantities of door locks, nuts and bolts, and saddles and harness.  The wealth generated has left a rich civic and industrial inheritance, linked by dense canal and railway networks.  The recently build New Art Gallery in Walsall has put the borough on the UK cultural map, but there are sill many architectural secrets little recognised, even by locals.
