It began with Moreen and Randy's wedding.  For Ellen Chambers, watching her teenage daughter marrying into disaster, it was not a happy event.

Only the uninvited wedding guest distracted her from her bitter thoughts.  Tall, dark-eyed, curiously self possessed, his presence sent a thrill of electricity through the guests assembled in the hayfield like the shadow of a coyote through a flock of sheep. 

Neal, her husband Scott's nephew, last seen as a young boy at the centre of a terrible family tragedy, had suddenly returned to the fold after twelve years in the wilderness.  Now here he was, hoping they could get to know each other again. 

And by the time they do, Ellen is going to understand the true meaning of obsession.  Of hate.. Of passion. Of fear.  And finally she'll learn where it all really began.  The same dark and terrible place it's going to end.
